Disney has announced that another popular and celebrated night time parade will be ending its run at Walt Disney World in Florida. The Main Street Electrical Parade will be leaving the Magic Kingdom later this year and then making a pit stop on the other side of the country for a limited engagement. The Main Street Electrical Parade originally opened at the Magic Kingdom in 1977. Considering that it’s coming up on a big anniversary I’m surprised that Disney is pulling the plug now. The parade has closed on and off since then but it’s universally accepted that it’s a classic Disney feature. The parade will be ending on October 6th of this year. It will then hop over to Disneyland for a limited run early next year. This feels like Disney is just buying time before Paint The Night’s replacement is ready.
In recent years I’ve felt that the parade felt really out of date. In fact I will usually not stop to watch it when I’m in Magic Kingdom at night. It’s turned into more of a burden for me since it really clogs up Main Street and the Hub. It’s one of those parades that once you’ve seen it you’re good for quite a while. This isn’t to say that I don’t like it. I listen to the soundtrack quite often and I’ve filmed it many times. It just doesn’t have the draw that Paint The Night does. Hopefully Disney will bring in an even bigger and grander version of Paint The Night to Magic Kingdom. There was speculation that Paint The Night would come to Magic Kingdom after September but it’s looking more and more like this won’t happen.
